Dr. Rowland will interview each participant.  She will assess the communication competency of each participant and identify behaviors that may be interfering with success on the certifying examination.

                      Developing conversational skills on current topics in surgery,

including, but not limited to:

oncology

breast

trauma

critical care

 melanoma

 colorectal

      Small Group Practice Sessions  

                                                     

Participants are assigned to small groups for practice sessions.  These sessions are facilitated by additional surgery faculty.

 

                       Required Review (Academic Center)

 

 

Day Three

Academic Center

Each participant is expected to review his/her oral examinations, individual videotapes of other participants and videotapes tapes from quantitative research projects provided by the faculty.  

 

Post-Tests - Consult Individual Schedules

                    Note:  Participants are expected to dress appropriately for the examination.

                    

This session  is designed to model the actual   

       Certifying Examination Process. 

 

Each participant will be examined in 3 separate hotel suites  with two general surgeons.  Part of these sessions will be videotaped for the individual to review in the Academic Center.

          Faculty Evaluation Session

          Post-Test Individual Debriefings                   

Drs. Rowland and Lang will meet individually with each participant for a debriefing.  The faculty will review strengths and weakness of the participant and suggest a plan for improvement.  At this point, the participant is provided with a set of practice questions designed for an oral board in general surgery, a plan for improvement and a videotape/dvd of part of his/her oral examination.

 

We will suggest that individuals attend specific sessions of the ACS Clinical Congress to improve knowledge base deficits.

Each participant will receive a follow-up letter from the course directors that will summarize the contents of the debriefing.
